Estancias 2019 prom was held at The Mansion nightclub on Saturday night June 1. The dance started at 7 pm and ended at 10:30 pm.
At the start of the dance it was a bit slow but it didn't take long for people to get their groove on. There was a game room where you could play Super Smash Bros as well as Billiards but was not accessible to students because the cues could be used as weapons. There were sacks like strawberries and bananas that you could dip into a chocolate fountain. There was also salted chips, rice krispie treats, cookies and small sandwiches. The whole time people were dancing and singing along to songs. An Estancia High School senior, John Mojica said, “Prom was really fun, I enjoyed my night.”
Throughout the night, multiple mosh pits were going off, but was later stopped by a teacher. Towards the end of the dance the Prom king and queen were being announced. Raul Gonzalez was chosen as Prom King and Mackenzie Mcintyre for Prom Queen. After the announcement the dancing kept going. It wasn't only students dancing at this point but some teachers as well. An Estancia High School senior, Georgina Gonzalez said, “Prom was fun with my friends and so was the photo booth.”
Jennifer Neri a senior at Estancia High school was awarded the Superintendent's 2019 Character Trait Award for citizenship.
A total of six students from six different high schools were awarded the Superintendent's 2019 Character Trait Award, with each student representing a different trait. Jennifer Neri will be given a banner with her picture and her trait of citizenship which will hang in front of the attendance office at Estancia forever. It's also being hung in the NMUSD office for a year. Jennifer Neri is the fourth student from Estancia High School to be awarded the Superintendent’s 2019 Character Trait Award. A few other students from Estancia High School who have received the award are Emily Kubisty, James Brown, and Yvonne Padilla. Emily was awarded fairness, James was awarded Citizenship, and Yvonne was awarded responsibility in 2018, 2018 and 2017 respectively.
Neri received the award while she was in class and said, “I got nervous because I don't like being the center of attention and having 30 students as well as staff staring, and being talked about is not really my suit. I’d rather do things than just be like recognized in front of so many people, but it did feel awkward to have the cameras. I didn't know if I should keep smiling or look to my feet or my peers.” Neri's club, Acts of random kindness (A.R.K.) contributed to her receiving the award. Her club does events around school like putting sticky notes on lockers with nice comments. Neri said, "sometimes we wake up on the bad side and seeing a nice comment can make someone's day and change their decision for the day or life in general." She's also the Senior Class President meaning she sets up events and speaks with the administration and the PTSA. Neri claims this could have contributed to her receiving the award as well.
The measles virus has rapidly spread around the U.S. in areas like L.A., New York, Orange County, and Washington state, with major cases being identified over the past two weeks.
Measles is an infectious viral disease causing fever and a red rash on the skin, typically occurring in childhood. L.A. county declared a measles outbreak last week which caused more than 1000 people to stay home because they may have been exposed to the virus. L.A. County health officer Dr. Muntu Davis claims, “An L.A. County resident visited Vietnam earlier this year and contracted measles.” This was the first known case of the outbreak.
Another case of measles was reported when an L.A. County resident took a trip to and returned from Thailand. Davis continued, “There's a high number of cases in many other countries and people are travelling more. We expect that we may see more cases of measles inside Los Angeles County.” It's said that anyone leaving the country has the two recommended doses of the measles vaccine, which together can be 97% effective. This year in California 14 out of 38 people became sick with measles after visiting countries like India, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Ukraine. Four of the people infected 22 others but they hadn't been vaccinated. If you have symptoms like pain in the muscles, fever, malaise, fatigue, or loss of appetite, skin rash, dry cough, pink eye, diarrhea and headaches. It is recommend you get checked out by a physician. Diseases once thought to be eradicated are coming back due to parents questioning and not having their children get required vaccines.
Dumbo, a 2019 live action film inspired by the 1941 cartoon film. The new movie takes on a slightly different storyline with some similar scenes from the original film. The movie revolves around a circus called the Medici Brothers. One of the main characters Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) also known for his roles in S.W.A.T., Dead Man Down, and The Recruit is the father of two, Joe Farrier (Finley Hobbins) and Milly Farrier (Nico Parker) who after coming back from war was put on elephant duty by Max Medici (Danny DeVito) the owner of the circus. who played roles in Matilda, Space Jam, and Batman Returns.
The Farrier family goes into the elephant train car and realise that baby Dumbo was born. The Circus thinks Dumbo is a hideous elephant because of his massive ears. Max Medici (Danny DeVito) doesn't want the public to know about the elephant but Rongo (DeObia Oparei) had already released a paper about it. For the next Medici brothers show they have Dumbo in a baby carriage and the whole act goes horribly wrong when dumbo ends up being made fun of. Later on they bring dumbo out for another show and he's supposed to put out a fire to save a monkey from a burning building. Dumbo ends up stuck on the burning building, he jumps off and shocks audience by flapping his ears and flying around the circus. Vandemere (Michael Keaton) hears about the flying elephant and wants to add him to his own circus DreamLand. He doesn't end up succeeding because the Medici Brothers Circus frees Dumbo and his mother into the wild.
For a live action film the effects were really good. I was surprised at how well the actors interacted with the animals. The two Farrier kids Joe Farrier (Finley Hobbins) and Milly Farrier (Nico Parker) were phenomenal actors for there age.
I would rate this movie an A because it wasn't just a remake of the first 1941 film, but had its own storyline and and was a live action film. If you're a fan of Disney movies like The Lion King and Bambi I don't see why you wouldn't go see Dumbo you'll definitely enjoy it.
Captain Marvel, a woman who gets caught up in a war between aliens fights to protect the ones she cares about and through it all must try and figure out her past and who she really is.
It you saw Avengers Infinity War this movie will explain the ending and give you the story behind Avengers and how it all began.
Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is trained by Yon Rogg (Jude Law) who tries to help her control her powers and not let her emotions get the best of her. They are both deployed on a mission and Captain Marvel is abducted by the Skrulls. As the movie progresses Captain Marvel figures out she had a life on earth and her name was Carol Danvers. She meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who helps her fight the Skrulls and uncover the truth of her past. Through all the problems Captain Marvel faces one of the toughest struggles and realized the people she thought were closest to her were the ones feeding her lies and keeping the truth away from her.
The special effects were good especially since they were in space you would want the scenes to look appealing. There is a scene at the beginning of the movie when Captain Marvel looks out a window and there is a futuristic city with floating vehicles and huge buildings and the visual was on point and satisfying. When they have her flying around and fighting the enemies the scenes are put together well and don't look fake.
Overall I would rate this movie a B, because it lacked a bit on the action scenes. It was definitely focused more on the story line due to the fact that it shows the viewers how the Avengers was started and how Fury ( Samuel L. Jackson) lost his eye If you're a fan of superheroes go watch the movie, you'll enjoy it.

Broly and his father join the Frieza Force and try take down the other two Saiyans Goku and Vegeta. Frieza desperate to get rid of Goku and Vegeta, kills Broly’s father and blames it on the two saiyans. This awakens Broly's power which then leads to an amazing fight between the three Saiyans. Broly has a power that is like no other, he Is almost unstoppable. In order for Goku and Vegeta to defeat Broly they have to fuse together becoming Gogeta. They then bring Broly down to the point where they're are going to kill him but then Bulma (Aya Hisakawa) makes a wish to the seven DragonBalls to take Broly back where he came from. Broly is then sent back to Planet Vampa. Goku visits Broly and gives him food and shelter but in return wants to train him and fight with him again.
Overall I would rate this movie an A because it delivered all the action you could ask for and it definitely kept the viewer in there seat. If you're someone who enjoys a ton of action and not much talking then I would definitely recommend this movie.
On January 16th the Estancia Varsity soccer team (10-5-2) went up against Calvary Chapel (0-5-1) in a low scoring game that ended 2-0 Estancia taking the win.
The game started off with both teams being very aggressive and having equal amount of times to score on each other. Calvary Chapel had come closer to scoring at certain points in the first half. Bryan Alvarez #14 received a good pass and almost scored on Calvary. Calvary Chapel comes back and tries to score on Estancia. Eric Avonce #4 got tripped up while trying to defend the goal so Calvary gets a corner kick which they end up missing. Marcos Arreola #17 takes the ball and forces Calvary Chapel’s goalkeeper to come out making it easier to score the goal. Towards the end of the first half Estancia has had more control of the ball. Leonardo Martinez #8 said at the end of the first half, “Right now we’re doing good and doing good crosses to the goal, attacking center mids giving through balls to the forwards.” The first half then ended 1-0.
At the start of the second half, Estancia was the more aggressive and constantly defended the ball. Estancia got a free kick and miss their shot. Jessie Mejia #20 missed a long shot that hits the top pole of the goal. Omar Martinez #13 later on got a chance of scoring but ended up missing his shot. Estancia then got a corner kick but Calvary Chapel’s goalkeeper blocked the shot. Miguel Pena #11 got tripped up and therefore lead to a penalty kick and scored the goal. After this last goal Estancia maintained control and the game ends 2-0. Gerardo Leon Camberos #10 said, “Good effort from the team, and good result but there's still some improvement that we need.” The Head Coach Robert Castellano was asked what his thoughts were on the game and he said, “A little frustrating the boys didn't play their full potential and underestimated Calvary Chapel but in the end of the day we won the game.”
On December 17th the Estancia JV soccer team (3-8-1) went up against Oceanview (8-1-3) in a low scoring game resulting in a tie 1-1.
Estancia started off slow in the first half with Ocean View being the more aggressive team, but then Estancia began to advance and become more offensive throughout the game. The opposing team then scored a goal making the score 0-1. One of Estancia’s players junior, Alessandro Madrigal was asked about the teams preparedness, “I think they are a hardworking team, they know how to touch the ball.”
In the second half things got even more intense with Estancia being down a score and profanity being exchanged between teams. Questionable calls were made against Estancia in the form of an offside and the failure to call a penalty kick which could’ve evened up the score.
Estancia had the chance to score on a corner kick but Ocean View with their effort to save the ball scored on themselves. Towards the end of the game tempers and aggression continued when Junior, Addiel Ruiz from Estancia was choked and brought down by one of the defensive players from Ocean View. The scuffle was quickly broken up by teammates. Ruiz said, “The first half our team could have played better, in the second half we picked it up.” The game ended with a score of 1-1. After the game, Estancia’s JV Head Coach Antonio Garcia said, “They could do so much better, they threw away a game. They still have a chance at winning league.”
Halloween, Its been some time since Michael Myers has been on a killing spree. Laurie Strode(Jamie Lee Curtis) and her daughter Karen Strode(Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson(Andi Matichak) try to survive Halloween night in Haddonfield, Illinois with Michael Myers(James Jude Courtney) running around killing people once again. This mystery slasher film really gets the attention of the viewers right away. When John Carpenter’s Halloween theme song plays at the start of the movie you know, Michael Myers is back. After 40 years of being locked up in a mental institution Michael Myers finally escapes and is wanting to get vengeance for being locked up. The actor who played Michael Myers(James Jude Courtney) couldn't have played his role any better. He said “There’s a stealth efficiency to the way an actual trained killer works”. He once lived with a hitman who actually showed him how a killer doesn't waste time killing their victim. Michael Myers goes after the friends of Allyson sort of reminding the viewers how 40 years ago he did the same with Laurie and her friends. Later in the story Laurie Strode is put face to face with Myers and they fight it out until she finally traps him with the help of her daughter Karen and her granddaughter Allyson. Overall, I would rate this movie a B+ because it delivered the suspense and the gore but i feel like towards the end they could've added just a bit more to the struggle between Michael and Strode. If you’re a die hard slasher fan i would recommend you watch it because you’ll definitely enjoy it.
